Folic acid
Indications/Uses
Treatment & prevention of folate deficiency state. Protection against neutral tube defects in offspring of women of child-bearing potential & in pregnant women. Megaloblastic anemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Folate deficiency megaloblastic anemia Adult 5 mg daily for 4 mth. Childn up to 1 yr 500 mcg/kg once daily. Prophylaxis of megaloblastic anemia on dialysis Childn ≥12 yr 5-10 mg daily, 1 mth-12 yr 250 mcg/kg once daily. Prophylaxis of megaloblastic anemia of pregnancy 200-500 mcg daily. Prevention of neural tube defects in the offspring for pregnant & women of child-bearing potential 4-5 mg daily starting before pregnancy & continued throughout the 1st trimester.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Should not be given alone or in conjunction w/ inadequate amounts of hydroxocobalamin for the treatment of megaloblastic or pernicious anemia.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
Megaloblastic anemia w/ MXT or antiepileptics. Decreased serum conc of phenytoin & barbiturates. May lower blood conc of vit B12. May be inhibited by gastric acidity & presence of ascorbate in GI tract. Reduced intestinal absorption w/ metformin. Folate depletion w/ phenytoin. Dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors. May produce deficiency states w/ antiepileptics, OCs, anti-TB drugs, alcohol & folic acid antagonists (eg, MXT, pyrimethamine, triamterene, trimethoprim & sulfonamides).
