Prevention & treatment of vit B deficiencies eg, beri-beri, ariboflavinosis & pellagra. Nutritional supplement to stimulate appetite & promote energy build-up.
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Cyanocobalamin: Not to be given to patients w/ suspected vit B12 deficiency w/o 1st confirming diagnosis. Not to be used for Leber's disease or tobacco amblyopia. Ascorbic acid: Care in patients w/ hyperoxaluria & G6PD deficiency.
Riboflavin: May result in bright yellow discoloration of the urine in large doses that may interfere w/ certain lab test. Pyridoxine HCl: Severe peripheral neuropathies in long-term use of large doses. Cyanocobalamin: May produce hematological response in doses >10 mcg daily in patients w/ folate deficiency. Ascorbic acid: Diarrhea & other GI disturbances, hyperoxaluria & formation of Ca oxalate calculi in large doses.
Pyridoxine HCl: Reduced effects of levodopa. Reduced activity of altretamine. Decreased serum conc of phenobarb. Increased requirements for vit B6 w/ hydralazine, isoniazid, penicillamine & OCs. Cyanocobalamin: GIT absorption may be reduced by neomycin, ASA, histamine H2-antagonist, omeprazole & colchicine. Serum conc may be decreased by OCs. Effect may be attenuated in anemia w/ parenteral chloramphenicol. Ascorbic acid: Not to be given for the 1st mth after starting desferrioxamine treatment. Decreased serum conc of fluphenazine. Bioavailability may be affected w/ omeprazole.
