Ascorbic acid
Indications/Uses
Prevention & treatment of vit C deficiency. For increasing body resistance to stress & infection. To hasten healing of wounds & to meet increased needs during pregnancy & lactation, infection, prolonged illness, operation & convalescence; formation of RBC.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1 tab daily. Childn 6-12 yr ½ tab daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ hyperoxaluria & G6PD deficiency.
Adverse Reactions
Large doses: Diarrhea, other GI disturbances, hyperoxaluria, formation of renal Ca oxalate calculi; tolerance (prolonged use).
Drug Interactions
Should not be given for the 1st mth after desferrioxamine treatment. Giving ascorbic acid for vit C deficiency to patient receiving fluphenazine for bipolar disorder was associated w/ decrease in serum conc of fluphenazine & deterioration of behavior. Omeprazole may affect bioavailability of vit C.
