High doses of ascorbic acid may precipitate stone formation in some patients. Large doses may cause also oxaluria, uricosuria and formation of renal calcium oxalate calculi. Urinary stone formers appear to be at higher risk for calculi if they take large doses of vitamin C daily. Large dose of vitamin C can also produce false positive results for glucose in urine and false negative test for blood in the stools. High doses may produce "rebound scurvy" in adults who abruptly stop or reduce high long-term intakes. Prolonged use of large doses of chewable ascorbic acid may cause erosion of the enamel. Large doses may also result in hemodialysis in patients with G6 deficiency.
