Indications/Uses
Infections in which anaerobic bacteria have been identified or suspected as pathogens particularly B. fragilis & other species for which metronidazole is bactericidal. Prevention of post-op abdominal & pelvic infections due to anaerobic bacteria.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 100 mL IV infusion 8 hrly at a rate of 5 mL/min for 7 days. Childn <12 yr Single IV dose based on 1.5 mL/kg. Post-op infection prophylaxis 100 mL IV infusion immediately pre-, during & post-op, then 8 hrly thereafter until PO may be given to complete 7 days.
Contraindications
Blood dyscrasias, active CNS disease. Pregnancy (short high-dose regimen).
Adverse Reactions
Convulsive seizures, peripheral neuropathy. GI disturbances particularly nausea, headache, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, epigastric distress, abdominal cramping. Sharp unpleasant metallic taste; furry tongue, glossitis, stomatitis; reversible neutropenia, T-wave flattening (ECG tracings); dizziness, vertigo, incoordination, ataxia, confusion, irritability, depression, weakness, insomnia; urticaria, erythematous rash, flushing, nasal congestion, dryness of mouth (or of vag/vulva), fever; dysuria, cystitis, polyuria, incontinence, sense of pelvic pressure; candida proliferation in vag, dyspareunia, decreased libido, proctitis, fleeting joint, faints (serum sickness-like).
