Indications/Uses
Infections of brain (meningitis), lungs, middle ear, abdomen & abdominal wall (peritonitis), urinary tract & kidneys, bones & joints, skin or soft tissues, blood, heart. Specific sexually transmitted infections (gonorrhoea & syphilis). Patients w/ low WBC counts (neutropenia) who have fever due to bacterial infection. Infections of chest in adults w/ chronic bronchitis. Lyme disease in adults & childn including newborn babies from 15 days of age. Surgical prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult, elderly & childn ≥12 yr weighing ≥50 kg 1-2 g once daily depending on severity & type of infection. Severe infection Up to 4 g once daily. Daily doses >2 g may be given as single dose once daily or 2 separate doses. Newborn, infant & childn 15 days-12 yr weighing <50 kg 50-80 mg/kg once daily depending on severity & type of infection, ≥50 kg Adult dose. Severe infection Up to 100 mg/kg to max of 4 g once daily. Daily dose >2 g may be given as single dose once daily or 2 separate doses. Newborn 0-14 days 20-50 mg/kg once daily depending on severity & type of infection. Max daily dose: 50 mg/kg.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone; penicillin or similar antibiotics (eg, cephalosporins, carbapenems or monobactams); lidocaine & to be given w/ ceftriaxone IM. Ped: Premature; newborn (up to 28 days of age) & has certain blood problems or jaundice or given Ca-containing product into the vein.
Special Precautions
Patients recently received or about to receive Ca-containing products; had diarrhoea after having antibiotic medicine; gut problems particularly colitis; w/ liver or kidney problems; gall or kidney stones; other illnesses eg, haemolytic anaemia; on low Na diet. Regular blood tests in prolonged use. May affect results of urine tests for sugar & Coombs test. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
WBC abnormalities (eg, decreased leucocytes & increase of eosinophils) & platelets (decrease of thrombocytes); loose stools or diarrhoea; changes in results of blood tests for liver functions; rash. Severe allergic reactions & skin rashes.
Drug Interactions
Possible interactions w/ aminoglycosides; chloramphenicol.
