Levetiracetam
Indications/Uses
Adjunctive therapy in treatment of partial seizures w/ or w/o secondary generalization. May also be considered as 2nd-line drug in generalized tonic-clonic seizures in myoclonus including juvenile myoclonic epilepsy & for atonic or tonic seizures.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 1 g in 2 divided doses on 1st day, may be increased thereafter in increments of 1 g every 2-4 wk up to max of 3 g daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to levetiracetam or other pyrrolidone derivatives.
Special Precautions
Gradually w/draw treatment when discontinuing. Assess renal function prior to dose selection in patients w/ severe hepatic impairment. Patients w/ renal impairment may require dose adjustment. Not recommended in women of childbearing potential not using contraception & during pregnancy unless clearly necessary. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
Adverse Reactions
Somnolence, weakness, & dizziness.
Drug Interactions
Inhibited renal clearance of the primary metabolite w/ probenecid & other medicinal products excreted by active tubular secretion. Slightly reduced rate of absorption w/ food.
