As per WHO manual for the treatment of Diarrhea provides the following information on the assessment and treatment of dehydration: How to assess the degree of dehydration and choose a treatment plan: See Table 1.

How Much ORS Solution to be Used Based on Patient Assessment and Treatment Plan: Check the sachet if not broken before use. If it is, do not take the sachet.
Daily dose should be equivalent to patient's fluid requirement for maintenance and replacement of loses.
Prevention of dehydration (WHO - Treatment plan A): Direction: The contents of one sachet should be dissolved in sufficient clean drinking water to make 250 mL. However, the solution may be used for up to 24 hours if stored in a refrigerator immediately after reconstitution. The reconstituted solution must not be boiled.
Give as much fluid as the child or adult wants until diarrhea or vomiting stops or they may use the following guide according to the WHO: Child under 24 months: 50 to 100 mL after each loose stool (approximately 500 mL daily).
Child from 2 to 10 years: 100 to 200 mL after each loose stool (approximately 1000 mL daily).
Child over 10 years and adults: 200 to 400 mL after each loose stool (approximately 2000 mL daily).
Treatment of moderate dehydration (WHO - Treatment plan B): Direction: The contents of one sachet should be dissolved in sufficient clean drinking water to make 250 mL. However, the solution may be used for up to 24 hours if stored in a refrigerator immediately after reconstitution. The reconstituted solution must not be boiled.
Child and Adult: Over the first four hours: See Table 2.

After four hours: If there are no signs of dehydration: follow Treatment plan A.
If there are signs of moderate dehydration: repeat Treatment plan B.
If there are signs of severe dehydration: start IV therapy (Treatment plan C).
Treatment of severe dehydration (WHO - Treatment plan C): In combination with IV therapy and only to a conscious patient: Child and adult: 5 mL/kg per hour.
After 3 hours (6 hours in infants), reassess and choose the appropriate plan A, B or C.
Continue treatment until diarrhea stops/dehydration is corrected.
What Should the Patient Do if they Miss a Dose: Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. If the patient forgets to take a dose, take it as soon as they remember it and then take the next dose at the right time. If the patient has any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask the doctor or pharmacist.
