Piperacillin Na 4 g, tazobactam Na 500 mg
Indications/Uses
Bacterial infections of the lungs & airways (chest or lower resp tract infections); w/ in the abdomen; urinary tract; skin; & blood (septicemia or blood poisoning) in adult & childn >12 yr. Appendicitis complicated by a burst appendix, peritonitis &/or abscess formation in childn <12 yr. In combination w/ an aminoglycosides for bacterial infections in adult & childn >2 yr w/ low WBC counts (neutropenia).
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV infusion over 30 min Adult 3.375 g every 6 hr totaling 13.5 g (piperacillin 12 g/tazobactam 1.5 g).
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if bleeding manifestations occurred. Possibility of superinfections caused by emergence of resistant organisms. Renal failure. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Upset stomach, vomiting, unpleasant or abnormal taste, diarrhea, gas, headache, constipation, insomnia, rash, itching, skin, swelling, shortness of breath, unusual bruising or bleeding.
Drug Interactions
Prolonged t½ w/ probenecid. High doses of heparin, oral anticoagulants or other drugs that may affect the blood coagulation system or thrombocyte function. Prolongation of the neuromuscular blockage of vecuronium. Piperacillin Na: Reduced clearance of MTX.
