Indications/Uses
Treatment of peripheral & central neuropathic pain in adults. Adjunctive therapy in adults w/ partial seizures w/ or w/o secondary generalisation. Treatment of generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) in adults.
Dosage/Direction for Use
150-600 mg/day in 2 or 3 divided doses. Neuropathic pain 150 mg/day as 2 or 3 divided doses. May increase dose to 300 mg/day after an interval of 3-7 days, up to max of 600 mg/day after an additional 7-day interval. Epilepsy 150 mg/day as 2 or 3 divided doses. May increase dose to 300 mg/day after 1 wk. Max of 600 mg/day may be achieved after an additional wk. GAD 150-600 mg/day as 2 or 3 divided doses. May start w/ a dose of 150 mg/day, may increase to 300 mg/day after 1 wk. Following an additional wk, may increase to 450 mg/day. Max of 600 mg/day may be achieved after an additional wk.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Diabetic patients who gain wt on treatment. Discontinue treatment if symptoms of angioedema occurs. Dizziness, somnolence, loss of consciousness, confusion & mental impairment. Loss of vision, visual blurring or changes of visual acuity. W/drawal symptoms; elderly CV compromised patients. Increased adverse reactions in treatment of central neuropathic pain due to spinal cord injury. Monitor for signs of suicidal ideation & behaviour. Concomitant use w/ drugs that have potential to produce constipation (eg, intestinal obstruction, paralytic ileus, constipation). History of substance abuse; monitor for symptoms of misuse, abuse or dependence. Encephalopathy. galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Renal failure. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Women of childbearing potential, pregnancy & lactation. Do not use in pregnancy. Elderly. Childn <12 yr & adolescents (12-17 yr).
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, somnolence, headache; nasopharyngitis; increased appetite; euphoric mood, confusion, irritability, disorientation, insomnia, decreased libido; blurred vision, diplopia; vertigo; vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, flatulence, abdominal distension, dry mouth; muscle cramp, arthralgia, back pain, pain in limb, cervical spasm; erectile dysfunction; peripheral oedema, oedema, abnormal gait, fall, drunk feeling, abnormal feeling, fatigue; increased wt.
Drug Interactions
May potentiate effects of ethanol & lorazepam. Resp failure, coma & death w/ opioid &/or other CNS depressant drugs. Additive in the impairment of cognitive & gross motor function w/ oxycodone.
