Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ renal disease or renal dysfunction which may also result from conditions eg, CV collapse (shock), acute MI, & septicemia; acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis, w/ or w/o coma.
Lactic acidosis. Get patient immediate emergency medical help if symptoms of lactic acidosis occur. May cause hypoglycemia especially when taken together w/ certain medicines. Hyperglycemia. May cause ovulation in premenopausal women & can increase chance of pregnancy. Discuss birth control options if patient is a woman of childbearing potential. Not recommended during pregnancy. Not to be used by breastfeeding mothers. Consider insulin therapy for adequate glycemic control if metformin is discontinued.
Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) may occur if prescribed w/ other diabetes medications. Very serious allergic reaction (rare) eg, rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
β-blocker medications (metoprolol, propranolol, glaucoma eye drops eg, timolol) may prevent the fast/pounding heartbeat the patient would usually feel when hypoglycemia occurs.
