Description
Fauna Plus is a food supplement that contains 7 different strains of probiotics, namely: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Saccharomyces boulardii, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus casei, Bifidobacterium bifidum.
Action
Probiotics are live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host.
Probiotics are usually used to improve gut health. A scientific journal from European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition (ESPGHAN) evaluated the effects of specific strains of probiotics on acute gastroenteritis and prevention of Antibiotic Associated Diarrhea.
According to The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics the recommendation for probiotic use should be supported by well-designed controlled trials (RCT). Although a Food Supplement and there are no approved therapeutic claims, it is well noted that Fauna Plus should not be used as a medication to treat various illnesses, however; it is still relevant that the Probiotics in Fauna Plus should show promise on alleviation and prevention of certain bowel movement diseases.
It is evident that probiotics in Fauna Plus show promise on alleviation and prevention of certain bowel movement disease.
Indications/Uses
Acute Gastroenteritis: It is defined as decrease in the stool consistency and/or an increase in the frequency (typically less than 3 stools/day), with or without vomiting or fever. The duration of diarrhea ranges from 7 days to 14 days.
The treatment strategy for Acute Gastroenteritis is divided into three: Treatment and prevention of dehydration, shorten the duration of diarrhea and prevent prolonged diarrhea.
There are different treatment options and one of which is inclusion of probiotics.
In the recent published journal they have summarized the list of probiotic strains which alleviate the symptoms of Acute Gastroenteritis. Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Saccharomyces boulardii both showed positive effects on decreasing the duration of diarrhea compared to placebo. Fauna Plus contains these probiotics in adequate colony forming unit.
Lactobacillus rhamnosus was investigated in 11 RCT (Random Clinical Trials) from Cochrane review in 2010 and another subsequent systemic review identified 15 RCT by Szajewska et. al in 2013. Basing on these meta-analyses the duration of diarrhea was reduced for a mean of 27 hours; however they found that there was no influence on stool volume.
S. boulardii is another strain with a promising effect. Six RCT (n=606) reported the reduced risk of diarrhea lasting greater than or equal to 4 days. However, these studies do not influence the stool volume.
Another strain of probiotics Lactobacillus reuteri another probiotic found in Fauna Plus showed promise in an RCT that was published including 64 infants and children that resulted in the reduction of diarrhea duration.
Therefore, Fauna Plus is better used as an adjunct therapy in early course of acute gastroenteritis as its probiotics show effective reduction on diarrhea duration and not in stool volume.
Antibiotic Associated Diarrhea: Antibiotic Associated Diarrhea (AAD) is a common complication of antibiotic therapy. It is complication common to antimicrobials that target anaerobic bacteria such as clindamycin, penicillin, amoxicillin and clavulanic acid etc.
Recent studies showed that two strains found in Fauna Plus are effective in prevention of Acute Associated Diarrhea. These are S. boulardii and Lactobacillus rhamnosus.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Usual Dose: It is recommended to take Fauna Plus in one to two capsules a day when experiencing gut disturbances from diseases mentioned previously.
Pediatric Dose: A study on efficacy Lactobacillus rhamnosus (n=571) was conducted by Hatakka et al. (2001) on ages 1-6 years old. Another study by Guiterrez-Castrellon et. al (2014) studied the efficacy of Lactaboacillus reuteri DSM. They conducted their study with children ages 0.5 to 3 years.
Therefore, giving Fauna Plus with in the age group of 1-6 years old is considered safe and shows promise on alleviating the symptoms of diarrhea.
