Betamethasone valerate
Indications/Uses
Steroid-responsive scalp dermatoses (eg, psoriasis, seborrhea capitis, inflammation associated w/ severe dandruff).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult, elderly & childn >1 yr Apply a small quantity to the scalp at night & morning until improvement is noticeable. May then be applied once daily or less frequently to sustain improvement.
Contraindications
Scalp infection. Dermatoses including dermatitis in infants <1 yr.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ history of local hypersensitivity to corticosteroids. Risk factors that may increase systemic absorption of topical steroids. W/draw gradually if manifestations of hypercortisolism (Cushing's syndrome) & reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression occur. Avoid abrupt w/drawal. Reports of visual disturbance. Risk of bacterial infection w/ occlusion. Reports of rebound relapses, development of tolerances, risk of generalised pustular psoriasis & development of local or systemic toxicity when used in psoriasis. Avoid smoking or being near an open flame during application & immediately after use. Patients w/ renal or hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Long-term continuous therapy should be avoided where possible in infants & childn <12 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
Increased systemic exposure w/ CYP3A4 inhibitors eg, ritonavir, itraconazole.
