Azithromycin
Indications/Uses
Bronchitis, severe Campylobacter enteritis, chancroid, diphtheria, Legionnaire's disease & other Legionella infections, neonatal conjunctivitis, pertussis, pneumonia (mycoplasmal & other atypical pneumonias as well as streptococcal), sinusitis. Combined w/ neomycin for prophylaxis of surgical infection in patients undergoing bowel surgery. Uncomplicated Chlamydial urethritis, cervicitis or pharyngitis. As part of treatment regimen & prophylaxis for Mycobacterium avium complex infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Pneumonia or otitis media Childn >6 mth 10 mg/kg on the 1st day, then 5 mg/kg daily for further 4 days. Pharyngitis Childn >2 yr 12 mg/kg daily for 5 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
History of allergic or hypersensitivity reactions to azithromycin, erythromycin or any of macrolide antibiotics.
Special Precautions
Should not be used in patients w/ hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances; transient elevations of liver enzyme values; rashes, headache, dizziness; transient alterations in neutrophil counts.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ antacid, carbamazepine, cimetidine, terfenadine, zidovudine, didanosine, cyclosporin, digoxin, methylprednisolone, coumarin-type oral anticoagulants, rifabutin, efavirenz, fluconazole, indinavir, nelfinavir, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.
