Inactivated trivalent flu vaccine (split virion)
Indications/Uses
Active immunisation of adults, pregnant women & childn from 6 mth for prevention of flu disease caused by 2 influenza A virus subtypes & influenza B virus type. Passive protection of infants from birth to <6 mth following vaccination during pregnancy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/SC Adult, pregnant women & childn 6 mth-17 yr 1 dose of 0.5 mL. Childn <9 yr who have not been previously vaccinated 2nd dose of 0.5 mL given after at least 4 wk interval.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to vaccine, eggs (ovalbumin, chicken proteins), neomycin, formaldehyde, octoxinol-9.
Special Precautions
Anaphylactic reaction after previous inj. Not to be inj intravascularly. Not a protection for all vaccines. Postpone vaccination in acute febrile illness. Thrombocytopenia or bleeding disorder; syncope. Insufficient Ab response in patients w/ endogenous or iatrogenic immunosuppression. Infants <6 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Inj site pain, tenderness, erythema, swelling, induration & ecchymosis, fever. Adults, elderly, childn from 24 mth & adolescents 9-17 yr: Headache; myalgia; malaise, shivering. Childn 6-23 mth: Decreased appetite; abnormal crying, irritability; drowsiness; vomiting. Childn 6-35 mth: Diarrhoea.
Drug Interactions
Reduced immunological response w/ immunosuppressant treatment.
