Adult & adolescent ≥13 yr Two 0.5-mL SC inj 4-8 wk apart. Childn 12 mth-12 yr 0.5-mL SC inj as single dose. Min interval of 3 mth between doses if 2nd dose is administered.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to vaccine including gelatin; anaphylactoid reaction to neomycin. Blood dyscrasias, leukemia, lymphoma or other malignant neoplasms affecting bone marrow or lymphatic system. Immunosuppressive therapy eg, high-dose corticosteroids. Primary & acquired immunodeficiency states. Family history of congenital or hereditary immunodeficiency. Active untreated TB; active febrile illness w/ fever >38.5°C. Avoid pregnancy for 3 mth following vaccination.
Not to be inj IV. HIV-infected w/ or w/o immunosuppression. Avoid close association w/ high-risk individuals eg, immunocompromised, pregnant women & newborn infants w/o documented +ve history of varicella or lab evidence of prior infection for up to 6 wk following vaccination. Avoid pregnancy for 3 mth after vaccination in women of childbearing potential. Not to be used during pregnancy. Lactation. Childn <1 yr. Not recommended in infant <12 mth.
Reye syndrome w/ salicylates; avoid use 6 wk after vaccination. Defer vaccination at least 5 mth following Ig or varicella-zoster Ig administration, or blood or plasma transfusions. Not to administer any Ig including varicella-zoster Ig for 2 mth after administration.
