Tacalcitol is used to treat psoriasis (a type of skin disease that allows the skin cells to rapidly build up causing itchy patches of thick, red skin and silvery scales).
Apply Tacalcitol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more often or over a larger area than instructed by your doctor.
It is best to apply it in the evening.
This medicine is available as an ointment or lotion.
If you are using the ointment, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Apply a thin layer of ointment over the affected areas of the skin. Spread and rub the ointment gently.
- If you are using the ointment on your scalp, shampoo it out the next morning.
- Wash your hands after each application.
If you are using the lotion, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Apply a thin layer of lotion over the affected areas of the skin. Spread and rub the lotion gently.
- If you are using the lotion on your scalp, part your hair and place the nozzle close to the affected area, apply a few drops and rub the lotion gently.
- Wash your hands after each application.
Avoid transfer of this medicine to other areas of the body that are not affected by psoriasis.
Avoid any contact of this medicine with your eyes. Rinse immediately with water if Tacalcitol accidentally gets into your eyes. Alert your doctor if you start to have problems with your eyesight.
Tacalcitol must be used regularly for it to be effective. Continue using this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop using it unless instructed by the doctor.
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you often forget to apply your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- hypercalcaemia (high calcium level in the blood)
- other calcium metabolism disorder
- severe kidney disease
- severe liver disease
- certain types of psoriasis e.g. psoriasis pustulosa, psoriasis punctata
as Tacalcitol may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- mild to moderate kidney disease
- mild to moderate liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Tacalcitol to the elderly. Elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.
If you are going to undergo ultraviolet light treatment, inform your doctor that you are using Tacalcitol.
To avoid burns, do not smoke or go near naked flames. Fabrics (e.g. dressing, clothing, bedding) that have been in contact with this medicine must be washed to reduce product build-up or risk of any serious fire hazards.
Certain factors such as dry and cold weather, stress, trauma to the skin, infections, alcohol, and smoking can trigger or worsen psoriasis. Take good care of your skin by keeping it clean, moisturised and free from cuts and infections. Avoid going out during dry and cold weather. Learn to manage your stress, avoid alcohol, and quit smoking. Regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, and maintaining a healthy weight are also good for your overall health and wellness.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
Tacalcitol may cause any of the following side effects: rash, itching, and burning or redness of the skin.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- worsening of psoriasis
- rashes, breathlessness, swelling of the face, eyes or mouth
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- other medicines or supplements containing vitamin D
- water pills or medicines for water retention e.g. hydrochlorothiazide
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Tacalcitol.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Tacalcitol in its various forms can be flammable. Avoid exposure of this medicine to fire and open flames.
Do not use for more than 6 months after the first day of opening the container. Write the date of opening on the carton label so that you know when the container was opened.
Do not throw away this medicine via wastewater or household waste. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to throw away this medicine properly.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
