Norethisterone
Indications/Uses
Low dose: Dysfunctional uterine bleeding, polymenorrhoea, menorrhagia, metropathia haemorrhagia, premenstrual syndrome & menstruation postponement. High dose: Disseminated breast carcinoma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Dysfunctional uterine bleeding, polymenorrhoea, menorrhagia, dysmenorrhoea & metropathia haemorrhagia 1 tab tds for 10 days. Prevention of recurrence 1 tab bd from days 19-26 of 2 subsequent cycles. Endometriosis 1 tab tds for min of 6 mth, may be increased to 4 or 5 tab daily if spotting occurs. Menstruation postponement 1 tab tds 3 days before expected onset of menstruation. Premenstrual syndrome 1 tab daily from days 16-25 of menstrual cycle. Disseminated breast carcinoma Initially 8 tab daily, may be increased to 12 tab if no noted regression.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
History of or w/ thrombophlebitis, thromboembolic disorders, cerebral apoplexy; known or suspected breast carcinoma; undiagnosed vag bleeding; missed abortion. Diagnostic test for pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Thrombophlebitis, pulmonary embolism; fluid retention, epilepsy, migraine, asthma, cardiac or renal dysfunction. Breakthrough bleeding. Diabetic patients. Concomitant use w/ oestrogen-progestogen combination drugs. Hepatic impairment. Not recommended during 1st 4 mth of pregnancy. Lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Breakthrough bleeding, spotting, change in menstrual flow, wt, cervical mucous & secretion, amenorrhea, oedema, cholestatic jaundice, rash w/ or w/o pruritus, melasma or chloasma, mental depression, nausea, headache, visual disturbances.
Drug Interactions
Increased breakthrough bleeding incidence w/ rifampicin, INH, ampicillin, tetracycline, neomycin, penicillin, chloramphenicol, sulphonamides, nitrofurantoin, barbiturates, phenytoin, primidone, analgesics, tranquilisers, antimigraine prep, antihistamines. Altered effectiveness of oral anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, TCAs, antihypertensives (eg, guanethidine), vit, hypoglycaemic agents, tranquilisers, hypnotic prep, theophylline.
