Indications and Dosage

Topical/Cutaneous
Tinea pedis

Adult: For the treatment of interdigital tinea pedis: As 2% cream: Apply a sufficient amount onto affected area(s) and immediate surrounding skin bid for up to 4 weeks. Reassess therapy if no clinical improvement after 2 weeks. Treatment recommendations may vary among individual products or between countries (refer to specific product guidelines).
Child: ≥12 years As 2% cream: Same as adult dose.

Vaginal
Vaginal candidiasis

Adult: As vaginal supp: Insert 300 mg at bedtime as a single dose. May repeat a 2nd dose 1 week after the initial dose if symptoms persist. Treatment recommendations may vary among individual products or between countries (refer to specific product guidelines).

Adverse Reactions

Significant: Irritation or sensitivity reactions.
General disorders and administration site conditions: Burning sensation or skin tenderness at the application site.
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Erythema, contact dermatitis, pruritus, vesiculation, desquamation, hyperpigmentation of skin, dry skin.

Patient Counseling Information

Topical: Avoid contact with eyes and other mucous membrane. Do not use occlusive dressings unless directed by the doctor. Vaginal: May decrease the effectiveness of latex contraceptive agents (e.g. condoms and diaphragms).

Action

Description:
Overview: Sertaconazole is a synthetic imidazole derivative antifungal agent. It is active against several dermatophytes and yeasts, including the dermatophytes Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton floccosum.
Mechanism of Action: Sertaconazole inhibits fungal CYP450-dependent 14α-lanosterol demethylase enzyme, thereby inhibiting ergosterol synthesis and consequently altering the fungal cell membrane permeability.

Absorption: Minimal (topical).
