Piperazine is used to treat parasitic worm infections such as pinworm and roundworm that infect the intestines.
Take Piperazine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether you should take this medicine with or without food.
Try to take it at the same time each day.
To take the oral syrup, shake the bottle well before you take the medicine to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your infection and your response to the medication.
Take Piperazine at regular intervals. Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- current or history of epilepsy (fits or seizures)
- severe liver disease
- severe kidney disease
as Piperazine may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- low red blood cell count in the body
- severe malnutrition (nutrient imbalance due to insufficient or excessive dietary intake)
- brain problems
- mild to moderate kidney disease
- mild to moderate liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Take the dose after breastfeeding, then express and discard milk for 8 hours after administration of Piperazine.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Piperazine to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Avoid long-term use.
Practice good hygiene to reduce the chances of getting infected again. Wash your hands before eating and after using the toilet.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
Piperazine may cause drowsiness or dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following side effects: headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fits or seizures, and blurred vision.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop taking this medicine and inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines for mood disorders e.g. chlorpromazine
- pyrantel pamoate (other medicine for parasitic worm infections)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Piperazine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Protect from light.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
