Inactivated trivalent flu vaccine (surface antigen)
Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis of flu in persons ≥65 yr; adults & childn from 6 mth w/ chronic pulmonary or CV disorders, chronic metabolic diseases, chronic renal dysfunction & immunodeficiencies; childn 6 mth-18 yr on long-term ASA treatment.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/deep SC inj Adult & childn ≥36 mth 0.5 mL. Childn 6-35 mth 0.25 or 0.5 mL. Childn not previously vaccinated 2nd dose should be given after at least 4 wk interval.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to vaccine, eggs (ovalbumin, chicken proteins), formaldehyde, cetyltrimethylammon Br, polysorbate 80, gentamicin. Postpone vaccination in patients w/ febrile illness or acute infection.
Special Precautions
Anaphylactic reaction. Not to be administered intravascularly. Not to be used against all possible strains of flu virus. Thrombocytopenia or any coagulation disorder; anxiety- & stress-related reactions, syncope, hyperventilation. Avoid injury from faints. Insufficient Ab response in patients w/ endogenous or iatrogenic immunosuppression. Interference w/ serological testing. Childn <6 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Headache; sweating; myalgia, arthralgia; fever, malaise, shivering, fatigue, local reactions eg, redness, swelling, pain, ecchymosis, induration.
Drug Interactions
Diminished immunological response w/ immunosuppressants. False +ve ELISA serologic tests for HIV-1, hepatitis C & HTLV-1.
