Clemastine is used to relieve constant runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, or itchy nose associated with allergic rhinitis (inflammation inside the lining of the nose caused by allergens) which may occur only at certain times of the year or all year round.
This medicine may also be used to relieve itching, swelling in allergic skin conditions such as hives and itchy rash.
Take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Clemastine may be taken with or without food. You may take it with food to reduce any stomach discomfort that it may cause. Try to take it at the same time each day.
This medicine is available as a tablet and oral syrup.
If you are taking the tablet, swallow it with a glass of water.
If you are taking the oral syrup, shake the bottle well before you take the medicine to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.
The dose of Clemastine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on your condition and response to the medication.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have breathing problems as Clemastine may not be suitable for you.
Do not take this medicine if you are breastfeeding.
Do not give Clemastine to children below 1 year of age.
Do not take this medicine if you are currently taking a medicine that is used to treat depression known as monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine and tranylcypromine.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- heart disease or problem with the heart or blood vessels e.g. high blood pressure, weakening of the heart due to reduced blood flow to the heart
- glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye)
- hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland)
- prostate enlargement
- blockage in the stomach, intestine or urinary tract
- history of asthma
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Clemastine to a child aged 1 year and above or the elderly. Children and elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Clemastine may cause drowsiness and dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: headache, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, restlessness, ringing in the ears, dry mouth, throat, or nose, diarrhoea, constipation, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain or discomfort.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Clemastine if you are currently taking a medicine that is used to treat depression known as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine and tranylcypromine.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking other medicines that cause drowsiness or affect your concentration.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
