Special Precautions

Hydrocortisone may mask or enhance incipient infection. Whenever there is a possibility of infection, the use of supplemental therapy (e.g. antibiotics) should be considered, and if the infection does not respond quickly, treatment with hydrocortisone should be discontinued until the infection has been adequately controlled. Systemic side effects may occur with extensive use. The use of occlusive dressings is not recommended. While hydrocortisone is usually effective in controlling signs and symptoms of skin disease, the underlying cause of the disorder should, where possible, be found and treated. Avoid long term topical administration in infants, in pregnancy and during lactation.
