Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis & chronic treatment of asthma in adults & ped patients ≥12 mth. Symptomatic relief of day- & nighttime seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults & ped patients ≥2 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult ≥15 yr 2 chewable tab daily in the evening. Ped 2-5 yr One 4-mg chewable tab daily in the evening, 6-14 yr One 5-mg chewable tab daily in the evening.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not to be used for acute asthma attacks nor as substitute for short-acting β-agonists. Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids. Neuropsychiatric events. Avoid aspirin or NSAIDs in patients w/ known aspirin sensitivity. Monitor patients during systemic corticosteroid dose reduction. Unsuitable for phenylketonurics. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Pregnancy & lactation. Not to be given in childn <2 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Palpitations, allergic granulomatosis angiitis; angioedema, bruising, erythema nodosum, atopic dermatitis, eczema, skin &/or subcutaneous tissue infection, rash, urticaria; GI, neurologic & psychiatric effects; blood coagulation disorder; raised ALT/AST levels, cholestatic hepatitis; hypersensitivity reactions; conjunctivitis, myopia; otalgia, otitis, otitis media; pyuria; bronchitis, acute cough, epistaxis, laryngitis, nasal congestion & discharge, pharyngitis, pneumonia, resp tract infection, rhinitis, sinusitis, upper resp infection, wheezing; arthralgia, myalgia; fatigue, fever, flu, malaise, traumatic injury; thrombocytopenia; obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
Drug Interactions
Elevated plasma conc w/ gemfibrozil. Severe peripheral edema w/ prednisone. Increased repaglinide plasma conc. Decreased bioavailability w/ phenobarb, rifampin. Concomitant use w/ CYP3A4 inducers eg, phenytoin, phenobarb, rifampicin.
