Why do I need this medicine?
Amoxicillin and Clavulanic acid are combined in this medicine.

Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid is an antibiotic. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the ears, nose, throat, lungs, abdomen, bladder, skin, bones and joints.

This medicine may also be used to prevent infections associated with major surgical procedures.
How do I use this medicine?
Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid injection is to be given intravenously (into the vein) as a slow injection or an infusion. It is delivered directly into the bloodstream via the blood vessel.

Your doctor or nurse will administer the injection for you.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your infection.

Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid injection must be administered at regular intervals. Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.
What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?
Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that you do not miss any doses. Your doctor also needs to regularly monitor your response to Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid.

If you miss an appointment or miss an injection, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not use Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or similar antibiotics such as penicillins (e.g. ampicillin) or cephalosporins (e.g. cefaclor, cefuroxime).

Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • history of liver disease due to previous use of this medicine
  • viral infection known as infectious mononucleosis
as Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid may not be suitable for you.
What should I take note of while using this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • unable to pass urine regularly
  • atopy (an inherited condition associated with heightened immune response to common allergens which may lead to allergic diseases including asthma)
  • liver disease
  • kidney disease or undergoing dialysis (a procedure that helps individuals with kidney failure to filter toxic substances from the blood)
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.

If you are going to have certain laboratory tests (e.g. urine glucose tests), inform your doctor that you are using this medicine.

Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
  • Routine tests (e.g. liver and kidney function, complete blood count) may be done while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
  • Regular monitoring for signs of infection and allergic reactions may also be needed.
What side effects could I experience?
Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid may cause any of the following side effects: headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, indigestion, itching, and thrush in the mouth, skin folds or vagina.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes, face or mouth
  • severe diarrhoea or diarrhoea with severe stomach cramps or bloody stools
  • fits or seizures
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain, dark coloured urine, unusual tiredness, swelling in the legs and ankles
  • rashes with peeling of the skin or blistering of the lips, mouth or eyes accompanied by fever
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I use this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • medicines for gout (high uric acid level in the blood) e.g. probenecid, allopurinol
  • blood-thinning medicines e.g. warfarin, acenocoumarol
  • mycophenolate mofetil (medicine used in organ transplants or certain immune disorders)
  • methotrexate (medicine for cancer)
  • birth control pills
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
