Alimemazine helps relieve allergic skin conditions such as hives and itchy rash.
This medicine may also be used for other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Alimemazine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food.
Alimemazine is available as a tablet, oral solution and syrup.
If you are taking the oral solution or syrup, follow these steps:
- Open the bottle by pressing the cap and turning it counterclockwise.
- Use the measuring device (e.g. oral syringe) supplied with each bottle.
- To use the oral syringe, insert it into the perforated stopper and turn the bottle upside down.
- Fill the syringe with the appropriate dose.
- Administer the medicine directly from the oral syringe.
- Wash the oral syringe after use.
You may stop taking this medicine when you have no more hives or itchy rash.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- epilepsy (fits or seizures)
- Parkinson's disease (disorder that affects the movement of a person, causing symptoms such as tremors, muscle stiffness, slowed movement and impaired balance or walking)
- phaeochromocytoma (rare tumour of the adrenal gland causing high blood pressure)
- myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness disorder)
- hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland)
- history of narrow-angle glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye)
- history of agranulocytosis (a serious condition with low counts of granulocytes [a type of white blood cell] in the body)
- enlarged prostate gland
- liver disease
- kidney disease
as Alimemazine may not be suitable for you.
Do not give this medicine to children below 2 years old unless instructed by the doctor.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- low volume of circulating fluids in the body
- heart or blood vessel disease
- low potassium level in the blood
- history of fits or seizures
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Alimemazine to a child (aged 2 years and above) and the elderly. Children and elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Alimemazine may cause drowsiness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: dry mouth, headache, dizziness, constipation, rash, stuffy nose, and difficulty sleeping.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- fever, sweating, stiff muscles, fast heartbeat, fast breathing, confusion, agitation
- fits or seizures
- involuntary movements of the tongue, jaw, mouth, arms and legs
- chest pain, tightness or pressure, fast or irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- strong painkillers
- medicines that cause drowsiness or affect your concentration
- medicines for high blood pressure e.g. clonidine, guanethidine
- medicines for diabetes
- levodopa (medicine to treat Parkinson's disease)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Alimemazine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol. Alcohol intake may worsen the drowsiness caused by Alimemazine.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Protect from light.
The oral solution or syrup should be used within 1 month after opening.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
