Amoxicillin trihydrate

Indications/Uses

Skin & soft tissue infections due to non-penicillinase-producing Staph, Strep spp, E. coli. Resp tract infection due to H. influenzae, Strep, S. pneumoniae, non-penicillinase-producing Staph, E. coli. GUT infection due to E. coli, P. mirabilis, S. faecalis. Gonorrhea due to N. gonorrheae.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult & childn >20 kg 250-500 mg 8 hrly. Childn <20 kg 20-40 mg/kg daily in divided doses 8 hrly. Patients under peritoneal dialysis Max dose: 500 mg daily. Gonococcal urethritis 3 g as a single dose.

Administration

May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals for better absorption & to reduce GI discomfort.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to β-lactam antibiotics ie, penicillins, cephalosporins.

Special Precautions

Not for treatment of meningitis or bone & joint infections. Patients w/ lymphatic leukemia. May cause severe colitis. Perform kidney, liver function & blood test during prolonged therapy. Patients w/ kidney failure. Pregnancy, lactation.

Adverse Reactions

Erythematous maculopapular rashes, urticaria, skin rashes, serum sickness. Anaphylaxis reactions. GI disturbances eg, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Hematological reactions (reversible).

Drug Interactions

Probenecid may increase & prolong blood level of amoxicillin. Concomitant use w/ allopurinol may increase the incidence of skin reactions.
