Indications/Uses
Water & electrolyte supplement or replenishment. Difficulties in the oral intake of water & electrolytes post-op & for hypertonic dehydration w/ hypokalemia. Maintenance soln in adults.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Usual dose: 500-1,000 mL IV drip infusion as a single dose. Infusion rate: Adult 300-500 mL/hr (±80-130 drops/min). Childn 50-100 mL/hr.
Contraindications
Lactacidemia, hyperkalemia, oliguria, Addison's disease, severe burn & azotemia. Patients w/ Na overload, glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome, severe hepatic injury, cardiac arrhythmia.
Special Precautions
CHF, renal failure, peripheral & pulmonary edema, preeclampsia, HTN, early post-traumatic state, severe sepsis, acidosis, reduced urinary output due to obstructive urinary tract disease, DM; patients on K-sparing diuretics. Should not be mixed w/ whole blood.
Adverse Reactions
Alkalosis; cerebral, pulmonary & peripheral edema; water intoxication, hyperkalemia, thrombophlebitis.
