Trichodazol

Tab: Trichomoniasis of the GUT, intra-intestinal amoebiasis, hepatic & extra-intestinal amoebiasis, giardiasis, Vincent's infection. Treatment & prevention of anaerobic infection. Supp: Treatment & prevention of infection due to anaerobic microorganisms in patients unable to take oral medication or contraindicated.

Tab Trichomoniasis 250 mg 3 times/daily for 7-10 days. If required, 2nd dose after 4-6 wk. Childn >10 yr 200-250 mg 3 times/daily for 7 days, 5-10 yr 375 mg/daily, 3-5 yr 250 mg/daily, <3 yr 150 mg/daily. Doses to be taken for 7 days. Amoebiasis Adult 750 mg 3 times/daily for 7-10 days or 2 g once daily for 2 days. Childn 35-50 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses for 10 days. Anaerobic infections Prevention: Adult 1 g as a single dose pre-op, then 250-500 mg 3 times/day or as a single dose. Childn 30 mg/kg as a single dose 24 hr pre-op, then 4 mg/kg 3 times/daily for 5 days. Treatment: Adult 500 mg 3 times/daily for 7 days. Childn 7.5 mg/kg 3 times/daily. Supp Treatment of identified anaerobic bacterial infection Adult 1 supp 8 hrly. Childn 7.5 mg/kg 8 hrly. Prevention of post-op infection due to anaerobic bacteria Adult 1 supp 2-4 hr pre-op then 8 hrly post-op. Childn ½ or ¼ of 500-mg supp 8 hrly.

Should be taken with food.

Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other metronidazole derivatives. Blood dyscrasias; active CNS disease. 1st trimester of pregnancy.

Alcohol consumption during therapy; convulsion; peripheral neuropathy or paresthesia; abnormal neurologic sign, psychosis; liver disorder, fungal (Candida) overgrowth in GIT or GUT. Prolonged use (>10 days) should be clinically monitored. Hepatic encephalopathy. 2nd & 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Lactation.

GI discomfort, anorexia, coated (furred) tongue, dry mouth, unpleasant taste, headache, pruritus, skin rash. Rarely, vomiting, diarrhea, neurologic effects, urethral discomfort & darkening of urine; leukopenia; nausea, urticaria, angioedema, drowsiness, dizziness, ataxia, constipation, glossitis, stomatitis, vertigo, weakness, dryness of external genitalia, dysuria, cystitis, peripheral neuropathy.

Alcohol & metronidazole may provoke a disulfiram-like reaction. Metronidazole enhances the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Cimetidine prolongs the t_½ of metronidazole. Other coumarin anticoagulants.

P01AB01 - metronidazole ; Belongs to the class of nitroimidazole derivatives antiprotozoals. Used in the treatment amoebiasis and other protozoal diseases.
