Allopurinol
Indications/Uses
Reduce uric acid formation where uric acid deposits have already formed (eg, gout arthritis, skin tophi, nephrolithiasis) or other predicted clinical risks.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 100 mg daily to reduce the risk of AR. Increase dose if serum uric acid response is unsatisfactory. Moderate condition 100-200 mg daily. Severe condition 300-600 mg daily. Antineoplastic-induced hyperuricemia 600-800 mg daily in 2-3 divided doses. Childn <15 yr 100-300 mg daily, monitor response for 48 hr if dose adjustment is to be made.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Discontinue immediately if itching & other hypersensitivity reactions occur. Do not start medication until acute gout attack has completely subsided. Maintain adequate hydration to avoid xanthine precipitation. Impaction of kidney stones due to uric acid.
Adverse Reactions
Rash, itching.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ 6-mercaptopurine, azathioprine, vidarabine, salicylate & other uricosuric agents, chlorpropamide, coumarin anticoagulants, phenytoin, theophylline, ampicillin/amoxicillin, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, bleomycin, procarbazine, mechlorethamine, cyclosporin, didanosine, diuretics, ACE inhibitor.
