Zinc sulfate monohydrate.
Giving zinc together with ORS as soon as possible after diarrhea will reduce the severity of dehydration. After diarrhea stops, give zinc continuously to replace the lost zinc content. The risk of children experiencing diarrhea again in the next 2-3 months can be reduced. Treatment of diarrhea together with ORS aims to prevent or treat dehydration and to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
Adjuvant therapy for diarrhea in children under 5 years, given with ORS.
Dispersible tab: Infant 2-6 mth: ½ dispersible tab (10 mg) daily for 10 days consecutively (even if the diarrhea is already stop); Children 6 mth-5 yr: 1 dispersible tab (20 mg) daily for 10 days consecutively (even if the diarrhea is already stop). Tablets should be dispersed with warm water or breastmilk.
Syrup: Infant 2-6 mth: 1 tsp (5 mL) daily for 10 days consecutively (even if the diarrhea is already stop); Children 6 mth-5 yr: 2 tsp (10 mL) daily for 10 days consecutively (even if the diarrhea is already stop).
Oral drops: Infant 2-6 mth: 1 mL (10 mg) daily for 10 days consecutively (even if the diarrhea is already stop); Children 6 mth-5 yr: 2 mL (20 mg) daily for 10 days consecutively (even if the diarrhea is already stop).
Oral zinc toxicity in adults may occur due to excessive zinc intake with a dose of >150 mg / day (10 times the recommended dose) over a long period. High doses of Zinc over a long period may cause a decrease in plasma lipoprotein concentrations and copper absorption.
Common reaction those might happen such as nausea, bitter taste, vomit, and irritation of oral cavity.
