Increases vitamin D [25(OH)D] levels in patients with vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency status.
Treatment in Adults: 5,000 IU daily for minimum of 8 weeks. Maintenance: 1,000 IU daily. Malabsorption, obesity and chronic vitamin D deficiency may need more dosage.
May be taken with or without food.
Hypersensitivity. Hypercalcemia and/or hypercalciuria. Calcium nephrolithiasis, nephrocalcinosis, hypervitaminosis. Severe kidney damage and failure.
Check vitamin D levels first before using high doses of vitamin D and monitor every 3 to 6 months.
Reduced effects with anti-seizures (phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone), rifampicin and isoniazid. Reduced effects with glucocorticoids. Medications that cause fat malabsorption eg, orlistat, liquid paraffin, cholestyramine, can interfere with cholecalciferol absorption. Cytotoxic drugs, actinomycin and imidazole antifungal drugs interferes with the activity of vitamin D. Increased levels/effects of aluminum hydroxide, cardiac glycosides, magnesium salts, sucralfate, vitamin D analogue.
