Erythromycin + Zinc acetate

Indications and Dosage
Topical/Cutaneous
Acne vulgaris
Adult: Each mL of cutaneous solution contains erythromycin 40 mg and zinc acetate 12 mg
Apply to the affected area bid for 10-12 weeks.
Child: Same as adult dose.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to erythromycin, zinc acetate, or other macrolide antibiotics.
Special Precautions
Children. Pregnancy and lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Significant: Rarely, serious allergic reactions including acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP).
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Dry skin, pruritus, erythema, skin irritation, skin burning sensation, skin exfoliation.
Patient Counseling Information
Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes of the nose and mouth.
Action
Description:
Mechanism of Action: Erythromycin exhibits its antibacterial activity by inhibiting RNA-dependent protein synthesis at the chain elongation step. It binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby blocking transpeptidation.
Zinc acetate is solubilised by forming a complex with erythromycin and aids in the wound healing process.
