Indications/Uses

Resp tract, UTI, skin, STD, ophth & Rickettsia infections. Alternative therapy for gonorrhea & syphilis.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult & childn 8 yr >45 kg Initially 200 mg as a single dose or 100 mg twice daily followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mg daily as a single dose or 50 mg twice daily. More severe infections: 200 mg daily. Childn 8 yr <45 kg 4.4 mg/kg daily in 2 divided doses on the 1st day followed by 2.2 mg/kg on subsequent days. More severe infections: 2.2 mg/kg 12 hrly. Uncomplicated gonococcal, urethral, endocervical or rectal infections, non gonococcal urethritis 100 mg twice daily for 7 days. Primary & secondary syphilis 300 mg daily in divided doses for 10 days.

Overdosage

View Doxicor overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.

Administration

Should be taken with food: Take w/ a full glass of water & remain upright for at least 30 min. Avoid taking w/ dairy products.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to tetracycline. Pregnant & nursing women. Childn <8 yr.

Special Precautions

Liver diseases & concomitant use w/ hepatotoxic drugs. Perform hematopoietic, renal & hepatic function test in long-term use. Permanent discoloration of the teeth if used during pregnancy, lactation & in childn <8 yr.

Adverse Reactions

Hypersensitivity reactions eg, urticaria, anaphylaxis & lupus erythematosus; anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, glossitis, superinfections caused by non-susceptible microorganisms; photosensitivity when exposed to direct sunlight; increased BUN; hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, eosinophilia.

Drug Interactions

Decreased blood level w/ phenytoin, phenobarb, carbamazepine. Absorption impaired by milk, Ca, Al, Mg, Fe minerals. Reduced the effectivity of OCs.
