Pharmacology: Erdosteine is classified as a mucolytic drug that pharmacologically works as a mucus diluent drug in the bronchi.
In addition, erdosteine is also working as a bronchial mucus dilator which facilitates expectoration also shows its effect as an antagonist to free radical formation and counteracts the action of elastase enzymes. From the results of pharmacological studies, this trait occurs after erdosteine is converted into an active metabolite that have -SH cluster. This metabolite can break down the disulphide group, resulting the decrement to elasticity and viscosity of the mucus and facilitate expectoration.
