Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis and Haemophilus B vaccine - Intramuscular

Patient Medicine Information
Why do I need this medicine?
Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis and Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccine helps protect infants and children against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, polio and Haemophilus influenzae type B infections.

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that mainly affects the airways, causing swelling and leading to serious breathing problems. It may also affect the skin, causing sores and skin covered by grey tissue.

Tetanus is a serious bacterial infection that causes painful muscle spasms and stiffness, particularly of the neck and jaw. The bacteria can enter the body through breaks in the skin, usually cuts, scratches, or wounds.

Pertussis or whooping cough is a very contagious bacterial infection that affects the airways causing severe coughing (often characterised by a "whooping" sound).

Hepatitis B is a contagious liver infection caused by a virus that is spread through contact with infected blood or other body fluids.

Poliomyelitis or polio is an infectious viral disease characterised by muscle paralysis.

Haemophilus influenzae type B is a type of bacteria that can lead to various serious illnesses such as blood infection, meningitis (infection of the linings covering the brain and spinal cord), pneumonia (an infection that causes inflammation of one or both lungs), and epiglottitis (infection in a part of the windpipe).

This medicine helps the body make antibodies (substances in the body that help fight infection) to protect infants and children against these infections.
