Cyclizine is used to treat or prevent nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness (unpleasant feeling when you're travelling), radiation therapy (cancer treatment), and nausea and vomiting after surgery.
This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Cyclizine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food.
For the prevention of motion sickness, it should be taken at least 1-2 hours before the travel.
You may stop taking Cyclizine when you do not feel nauseous, have spinning sensations, or the urge to vomit.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on your condition and your response to the medication.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Alert your doctor if you have recently been drinking a lot of alcohol as Cyclizine may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- heart problems e.g. heart failure (weakness and inability of the heart to pump blood), high blood pressure
- recent heart attack
- glaucoma (increased pressure in the eyes)
- stomach problems e.g. bowel blockage
- neuromuscular disorders (condition that affects the muscles and nerves that control your muscles)
- phaeochromocytoma (rare tumour of the adrenal gland causing high blood pressure)
- porphyria (an inherited disorder that causes skin or nervous system abnormalities)
- enlarged prostate
- urinary retention (inability to completely empty the bladder when urinating)
- breathing problems e.g. asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (a long-term lung disease that causes airflow obstruction making it hard to breathe)
- epilepsy (fits or seizures)
- history of drug or alcohol abuse
- liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Cyclizine to a child or the elderly. Children and elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.
This medicine may interfere with the results of the skin tests for allergies. Inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine before undergoing any skin tests.
Cyclizine may cause drowsiness or impair your motor skills. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dry mouth, constipation, ringing in the ears, and rash.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- inability to completely empty the bladder when urinating
- epilepsy (fits or seizures)
- involuntary rhythmic shaking of the hands or legs, trouble controlling body movements, twitching, change in balance, trouble swallowing or speaking
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines that cause drowsiness or affect your concentration
- strong painkillers e.g. pethidine, opioid analgesics
- certain medicines to treat depression e.g. amitriptyline, isocarboxazid
- aminoglycosides (certain antibiotics)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Cyclizine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol. Alcohol intake may worsen the drowsiness caused by Cyclizine.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Protect from light.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
