1. Thoroughly wash feeding bottle, nipple, cap and all utensils to be used in preparing the feeding.
2. After rinsing soap from the utensils, boil them for 5 minutes. Provide clean surface on which to prepare the formula.
3. In a separate pan, heat water to a rolling boil for 5 minutes and allow it to cool. Pour the correct amount of warm previously boiled water into the sterilised feeding bottle.
4. Fill enclosed scoop by pressing against the tin, then scrape level with the straight edge of a knife.
5. Add one level scoop of Similac Isomil to each 60 mL of water in bottle.
6. Mix until completely dissolved. Test temperature and feed. Once feeding begins, use within one hour or discard.
Note: Prepared formula may also be fed from a cup, or mixed with cereal or other solid foods.
Directions for Preparation and Use: Use as directed by the physician. Powdered infant formulas are not sterile and should not be fed to premature infants or infants who might have immune problems unless directed and supervised by the baby's doctor. Use water that has previously been heated at a full rolling boil for 5 minutes. Allow the water to cool and follow mixing instructions carefully. Use only the scoop (9.0 g) enclosed in the tin to measure Similac Isomil. If more than one feeding is prepared, it must be refrigerated at 35°F-40°F (2°C-4°C) and used within 24 hours. Once feeding begins, use within one hour or discard.
Warnings
Before deciding to supplement or replace breastfeeding with this product, seek the advice of a health professional as to the necessity of its use. It is important for the baby's health that all preparation instructions are followed carefully. If a feeding bottle is used before the establishment of breastfeeding, the baby may refuse to feed from the breast.
Proper hygiene, handling and storage are important when preparing formula. Failure to follow these instructions could result in severe harm. Never use a microwave oven to prepare or warm formula. Serious burns can result. There could also be health risks of introducing the product prior to the recommended age. The spray dry process in powder manufacturing might turn certain ingredients into very few dark particles. This is normal in powder processing and can be used with confidence.
Special Precautions
Formula for special medical purposes. Use under medical supervision.
Important Notice: Breastfeeding is the normal means of feeding infants and young children. Breastmilk is the natural food for their healthy growth and development. Use of breastmilk substitutes may put infants at risk of diarrhoea and other illnesses, when compared with breastfed infants. Breastfeeding is the best source of infant nutrition. Good maternal nutrition is important for preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding. When infant formula are to be used, a mother should be aware of the negative effect on breastfeeding along with financial and social implications of formula feeding, the difficulty of reversing the decision not to breastfeed, and the care that must be taken to prevent partial formula feeding from interfering with lactation. A healthcare professional should be consulted before initiating formula feeding. Infants should receive complementary food in addition to the formula milk from an age, as advised by a health worker, that is appropriate for their specific growth and development needs, and from 6 months of age onwards.
Caution For Usage
Powdered formula milk is not a sterile product and may become contaminated during preparation. It is necessary for formula milk to be prepared one feed at a time using boiled water allowed to cool down to no less than 70°C, which is intended for consumption by infants under 6 months of age.
Storage
Store unopened tin under normal room temperature conditions. Once the tin is opened, contents should be used within three weeks. Cover opened tin and store in cool, dry place (not in refrigerator).
