Indications/Uses
Decrease recurrence of overt hepatic encephalopathy episodes in patients ≥18 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity; intestinal obstruction.
Special Precautions
Clostridium difficile associated diarrhoea. Concomitant administration w/ other rifamycins. Reddish discoloration of the urine. Severe hepatic impairment. Concomitant use w/ a P-glycoprotein inhibitor. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Depression; dizziness, headache; dyspnoea; abdominal pain upper, abdominal distension, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, ascites; rashes, pruritus; muscle spasms, arthralgia; oedema peripheral.
Drug Interactions
Possible decreased exposure of CYP3A4 substrates (eg, warfarin, antiepileptics, antiarrhythmics, OCs) in hepatic impaired patients. Increased systemic exposure w/ ciclosporin (potent P-glycoprotein inibitor).
