Pneumococcal vaccine, polyvalent
Indications/Uses
Vaccination against pneumococcal disease (caused by those pneumococcal types included in the vaccine) for immunocompetent persons aged ≥50 yr as routine vaccination; immunocompetent persons aged ≥2 yr w/ chronic CV disease, chronic pulmonary disease or DM, w/ alcoholism, chronic liver disease or CSF leaks, w/ functional or anatomic asplenia, & those living in special environments or social settings; immunocompromised persons aged ≥2 yr, including those w/ HIV infection, leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, multiple myeloma, generalized malignancy, chronic renal failure or nephrotic syndrome, those receiving immunosuppressive chemotherapy (including corticosteroids), & those who have received organ or bone marrow transplant.
Dosage/Direction for Use
SC/IM Single 0.5 mL dose (preferably in the deltoid muscle or lateral mid-thigh).
Special Precautions
Will not prevent disease caused by capsular types of pneumococcus other than those contained in the vaccine. Revaccination of immunocompetent persons previously vaccinated w/ 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine is not routinely recommended. Revaccination following 2nd dose is not routinely recommended. Avoid IV or intradermal administration. Persons receiving immunosuppressive therapy may not obtain expected serum Ab response & potentially impair future immune responses to pneumococcal antigens. Caution in administering to individuals w/ severely compromised CV &/or pulmonary function. Delay use in case of any febrile resp illness or other active infection. Do not discontinue prophylaxis after vaccination in patients who require penicillin (or other antibiotic) prophylaxis against pneumococcal infection. Avoid vaccination during chemotherapy or RT. Do not concurrently give w/ varicella-zoster virus vaccine. Should be given to pregnant women only if clearly needed. Caution when administered to nursing mothers. Not recommended for use in childn <2 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Fever (≤38.8°C/102°F), inj site reactions (including soreness, erythema, warmth, swelling & local induration).
