Aluminium hydroxide

Aluminium hydroxide Should be taken with food. Oral susp: Shake well before use.

Patient with uraemia, heart failure, oedema, recent gastrointestinal haemorrhage, cirrhosis. Patients on low Na diet. Not recommended for use in patients with hypophosphataemia. Elderly. Pregnancy and lactation.

Significant: Constipation, aluminium intoxication, osteomalacia, osteoporosis; hypophosphataemia (prolonged use or large doses).
Gastrointestinal disorders: Nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, faecal impaction, faecal discolouration.
Metabolism and nutrition disorders: Hypomagnesaemia.

When used for hyperphosphataemia in patients with chronic renal failure: Monitor Ca and phosphorous levels and serum Al levels.

Description:
Mechanism of Action: Aluminium hydroxide is an inorganic salt. It neutralises hydrochloride in the stomach, thereby causing elevated gastric pH and inhibition of pepsin activity. Additionally, it binds phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, forming insoluble complexes, thus preventing the absorption of phosphate. As a topical agent, it provides temporary relief and protection for certain skin conditions.
Duration: 20-60 minutes (fasting state); up to 3 hours (1 hour after meals).
Pharmacokinetics:
Excretion: Via urine (17-30%); forms a combination with dietary phosphate in the intestine and is excreted in the faeces.
