Inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine (split virion)
Indications/Uses
Prevention of influenza caused by 2 influenza A virus subtypes & 2 influenza B virus types contained in the vaccine for active immunisation of adults, pregnant & childn ≥6 mth.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/SC Adult & childn 6 mth-17 yr 0.5 mL single dose. Childn <9 yr (not previously vaccinated) A 2nd dose of 0.5 mL should be given after an interval of at least 4 wk. Pregnant 0.5 mL single dose, may protect infant from birth to almost 6 mth through passive protection.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to inactivated quadrivalent flu vaccine or to any component that may be present as traces eg, eggs (ovalbumin, chicken proteins), neomycin, formaldehyde & octoxinol-9. Postpone vaccination in case of moderate or severe febrile or acute disease.
Special Precautions
Appropriate medical treatment & supervision should be available in case of anaphylactic reaction following vaccination. Not to be administered intravascularly. Subjects w/ thrombocytopaenia or bleeding disorder when given as IM. Syncope may occur; place procedures to prevent injury from fainting & manage syncopal reactions. May not protect all vaccinees. Patients w/ endogenous or iatrogenic immunosuppression may have insufficient Ab response. Interference w/ serological testing. Contains K <1 mmol/dose & Na <1 mmol/dose. Infant <6 mth. Not all infants <6 mth born to women vaccinated during pregnancy (through passive protection) may be protected.
Adverse Reactions
Headache; myalgia; malaise, inj site pain. Shivering, fever, inj site erythema, swelling & induration. Childn 9-17 yr, 3-8 yr & 6-35 mth: Inj site ecchymosis. Childn 6-35 mth: Vomiting; irritability, appetite loss, abnormal crying, drowsiness, inj site tenderness.
Drug Interactions
Use separate inj sites & needles in case of concomitant administration. Immunological response may be reduced w/ immunosuppressant treatment. False +ve serology test results using ELISA method for HIV1, hepatitis C & HTLV1.
