Sulfasalazine
Indications/Uses
Mild to moderate ulcerative colitis & adjunct therapy in severe ulcerative colitis; maintenance of remission in ulcerative colitis. Active Crohn's disease especially in patients w/ colonic involvement. RA.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Inflammatory bowel diseases Adult Severe attacks: 2-4 tab tds-qds in conjunction w/ steroids. Mild & moderate attacks: 2 tab tds-qds. Childn 40-60 mg/kg daily in 3-6 divided doses. Prophylaxis against relapses Adult 2 tab bd-tds. Childn 20-30 mg/kg daily in 3-6 divided doses. RA Adult 2 tab bd. Start therapy by 1 tab in the evening for 1st wk, 1 tab in the morning & evening for 2nd wk, 1 tab in the morning & 2 tab in the evening for 3rd wk, 2 tab in the morning & evening for 4th wk & after. May increase dose to 3 g daily if no response has been seen after 2 mth.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take preferably after meals. Swallow whole, do not crush/break.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to sulfasalazine, its metabolites, or to sulfonamides & salicylates. Porphyria.
