Morphine sulfate

Indications/Uses

Prolonged relief of severe pain.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Severe pain 10-20 mg 12 hrly. May be increased depending on severity, age & previous history of analgesic requirements. Post-op pain (24 hr after surgery) Patient >70 kg 30 mg 12 hrly, <70 kg 20 mg 12 hrly.

Administration

May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole, do not break/chew/crush.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Severe resp depression w/ hypoxia &/or hypercapnia, severe bronchial asthma or COPD, head injury, paralytic ileus, biliary colic, acute abdomen or hepatic disease, delayed gastric emptying, cardiac arrhythmias, known morphine sensitivity. Concurrent administration of MAOIs or w/in 2 wk of discontinuation. Not recommended for pre-op use or for the 1st 24 hr post-op. Pregnancy. Childn.
