Midazolam
Indications/Uses
Conscious sedation before diagnostic or therapeutic procedures w/ or w/o local anaesth. Premed before anaesth induction. As an induction agent in inhalation anaesth or a sedative component in combined anaesth including total IV anaesth. In combination w/ ketamine in childn. Long-term sedation in ICU.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Conscious sedation Slow inj approx 1 mg in 30 sec. Adult >60 yr, debilitated or chronically ill 1-1.5 mg to be given 5-10 min before procedure, further doses of 0.5-1 mg may be given as necessary, <60 yr Initially 2.5 mg to be given 5-10 min before procedure, further doses of 1 mg may be given as necessary. Anaesth Premed IM Adult >60 yr, debilitated or chronically ill 0.025-0.05 mg/kg. Usual dose of 2-3 mg, <60 yr 0.07-0.1 mg/kg. Childn 1-15 yr IM 0.08-0.2 mg/kg. Rectal 0.3-0.5 mg/kg 20-30 min before anaesth induction. Induction IV Premed adult <60 yr 0.15-0.2 mg/kg. Non-premed adult <60 yr 0.3-0.35 mg/kg. Maintenance 0.03-0.1 mg/kg/hr. Sedation in the ICU IV Loading dose: 0.03-0.3 mg/kg, inj each increment of 1-2.5 mg over 20-30 sec allowing 2 min between successive increments. Maintenance dose: 0.03-0.2 mg/kg/hr.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines.
