Ceftriaxone
Indications/Uses
Pneumonia. Sepsis. Meningitis. Bone, skin & soft tissue infections. Infections in neutropenic patients. Gonorrhoea. Peri-op prophylaxis of infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/IV Adult & childn >12 yr 1-2 g once daily. Severe case or infection caused by moderately sensitive organism May increase dose to 4 g once daily. Gonorrhoea (penicillase- & nonpenicillinase-producing strains) 250 mg IM as single dose. Peri-op prophylaxis 1-2 g as single dose depending on risk of infection to be given 30-90 prior to surgery. Childn weighing ≥50 kg Adult dose. Infuse over at least 30 min. Infant & childn 15 days to 12 yr 20-80 mg/kg once daily. Neonate ≤14 days 20-50 mg/kg once daily. Max daily dose: 50 mg/kg.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone or β-lactam antibiotics. Possible allergic cross-reactions in patients hypersensitive to penicillin. Not to be used in hyperbilirubinaemic and preterm newborns; may displace bilirubin from serum albumin and lead to bilirubin encephalopathy. Premature newborns up to a corrected age of 41 wk. Neonates ≤28 days who require treatment w/ Ca-containing IV soln including continuous Ca-containing infusions (eg, parenteral nutrition) due to risk of ceftriaxone-Ca precipitation.
