Indications/Uses
Single or multiple infections caused by susceptible organisms. Monotherapy as 1st choice drug before sensitivity test results are available. In combination w/ aminoglycoside or most other β-lactam antibiotics. In combination w/ antibiotic against anaerobes when presence of Bacteroides fragilis is suspected. Severe infections (eg, septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, meningitis; infections in immunosuppressed patients & those in intensive care). Resp tract infections including lung infections in cystic fibrosis. ENT, skin, soft tissue, GI, biliary, abdominal, bone, & joint infections. UTI. Infections associated w/ haemo- & peritoneal dialysis & continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Prostatic surgery (transurethral resection) prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV/IM Adult 1-6 g daily in 2 or 3 divided doses. UTI & less severe infection 500 mg to 1 g every 12 hr. Most infections 1 g every 8 hr or 2 g every 12 hr. Immunocompromised patient including those w/ neutropenia Very severe infection 2 g every 8 or 12 hr. Fibrocystic adult w/ pseudomonal lung infection 100-150 mg/kg daily in 3 divided doses. Prostatic surgery prophylaxis 1 g at induction of anaesth. Consider 2nd dose at the time of catheter removal. Infant & childn >2 mth 30-100 mg/kg daily in 2 or 3 divided doses. Immunocompromised/fibrocystic childn or those w/ meningitis May give up to 150 mg/kg daily. Max: 6 g daily. Neonate 0-2 mth 25-60 mg/kg daily in 2 divided doses. Elderly >80 yr Max daily dose: 3 g. Renal impairment: CrCl 31-50 mL/min 1 g every 12 hr, 16-30 mL/min 1 g every 24 hr, 6-15 mL/min 0.5 g every 24 hr, <5 mL/min 0.5 g every 48 hr. Patient in renal failure on continuous arteriovenous haemodialysis or high-flux haemofiltration in intensive therapy units 1 g daily either as single dose or in divided doses.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ceftazidime or any other cephalosporin. History of severe hypersensitivity (eg, anaphylactic reaction) to any other type of β-lactam antibacterial agent (penicillins, monobactams & carbapenems).
