Indications/Uses
Schizophrenia. Monotherapy in adults & adolescents ≥13 yr & as an adjunct to lithium or valproate in adults for acute manic & mixed episodes associated w/ bipolar I disorder & for maintaining stability or preventing recurrence. Adjunctive therapy to antidepressants for major depressive disorder (MDD). Irritability associated w/ autistic disorder. Tourette's disorder.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Schizophrenia Adult 10 or 15 mg/day once daily. Adolescent Recommended target dose: 10 mg/day. Initially 2 mg daily then titrate to 5 mg after 2 days and to target dose of 10 mg after 2 additional days. Subsequent dose increases should be in 5 mg increments. Bipolar disorder: Acute treatment of manic & mixed episodes Adult Monotherapy: Initially 15 mg once daily. Adjunctive therapy w/ lithium or valproate: 10-15 mg once daily. Adolescent Monotherapy: 2 mg/day w/ titration to 5 mg/day after 2 days & target dose of 10 mg/day after 2 additional days. Adjunctive treatment of MDD Patient already taking antidepressant Initially 2-5 mg/day. Recommended dosage range: 2-15 mg/day. Dosage adjustments of up to 5 mg/day should occur gradually at no <1 wk intervals. Irritability associated w/ autistic disorder Paed 6-17 yr Recommended dosage range: 5-15 mg/day. Initiate at 2 mg/day, dose may be increased to 5 mg/day w/ subsequent increases to 10 or 15 mg/day if needed. Dosage adjustments of up to 5 mg/day should occur gradually at no <1 wk intervals. Tourette's disorder Paed 6-18 yr Recommended dosage range: 5-20 mg/day. Patient weighing <50 kg Initiate 2 mg/day w/ target dose of 5 mg/day after 2 days. May be increased to 10 mg/day in patients who do not achieve optimal control of tics. Dosage adjustments should occur gradually in 5 mg/day increments at no <1 wk intervals.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
