Meropenem trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Treatment of susceptible infections including intra-abdominal, resp tract (including cystic fibrosis patients), skin & urinary tract; meningitis, septicemia, infections in immunocompromised patients.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Adult Nosocomial & ventilator-associated pneumonia, septicemia, gynecologic infections eg endometritis, skin & skin structure infections 500 mg. UTI, presumed infections in neutropenic patients 1 g. Cystic fibrosis Up to 2 g. Bacterial meningitis 2 g. Childn 4-18 yr w/ cystic fibrosis 25-40 mg/kg. Childn >3 mth-12 yr 10-20 mg/kg. Childn >50 kg Adult dosage. All doses are to be administered 8 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Renal impairment (CrCl <51 mL/min). Partial cross-allergenicity w/ other carbapenems & β-lactams, penicillins & cephalosporins. Pregnancy & lactation. Infant <3 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Inflammation, thrombophlebitis, inj site pain, rash, pruritus, urticaria, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Pseudomembranous colitis.
Drug Interactions
Increased elimination t½ & plasma conc w/ probenecid.
