Furosemide
Indications/Uses
Cardiac, hepatic or renal oedema; HTN.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Oedema Initially 1 tab once daily. HTN 1-2 tab daily as monotherapy or in combination w/ other antihypertensives. Inj Oedema Initially 1-2 amp once daily. HTN 2-4 amp daily alone or in combination w/ other antihypertensives.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Renal failure w/ oliguria or anuria resulting from poisoning w/ nephrotoxic or hepatotoxic agents; severe renal impairment w/ simultaneous hepatic failure & hepatic coma; pre-comatose states associated w/ hepatic cirrhosis.
Special Precautions
Correct severe hypokalaemia, severe electrolyte depletion, hypovolaemia & hypotension before initiating treatment. Prostatic hyperplasia, impaired micturition, diabetes, gout. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Fluid & electrolyte imbalance manifested as headache, hypotension, muscle cramps, dry mouth, thirst, weakness, lethargy, drowsiness, restlessness, oliguria, cardiac arrhythmias & GI disturbances. Increased urinary Ca excretion, hyperglycaemia, glycosuria, hyperuricaemia,
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ aminoglycosides, lithium, other antihypertensives, ganglionic or peripheral adrenergic blockers, cephalosporins, carbamazepine, phenobarb, NSAIDs, probenecid, cardiac glycosides, antidiabetics, pressor amines, curaremimetic muscle relaxants.
